In general, the way in which chickens and turkeys are kept is an absolute abomination, and we should seriously question our participation in a system which causes so much suffering to sentient beings.
You can joke back and forth, or thump your hairy chests about how much you enjoy turkey that Mom, or some other female companion makes, and I have no real problem with people eating the flesh of a creature that has died without undue suffering after a good life (such as, for instance, a cage free, grain fed chicken, or a deer that is hunted and killed).
So the question is whether or not you are willing to pay a few dollars more for your dead bird, if, in doing so, you are not paying the way for those who kept the animal in utter misery and pain all of its days.

Happy Thanksgiving (gobble gobble)!

It better be fried and it better taste like chicken, dang it!

Domesticated poultry is an inferior protein source, and also lacking in flavor. Wild fowl is a healthy delicacy.

Ok, so we stop eating chickens. The next step, we release the several billion domesticated in North America to fend for themselves.
Good luck with that. Sounds real humanitarian to let an animal that has been domesticated for over 8,000 years to return to the wild where it has no ability to survive.

A vegetarian diet is as good for humans health as it is for animals.

Many claim that birds are dumb. Well, I once had a chicken as a pet, he/she (never found out because we gave it away too early) was very intelligent, just like a cat or dog. He was also very affectionate to me and followed me everywhere and loved to cuddle up with me. I miss him so much and everytime I think of him I cry a little. I wish I never let my mom give it away and have to live with the guilt that it might have ended in someone's frying pan. With that being said, chicken is the meat I eat most often and if I get to order chicken wings on the wing night, I eat like 50 of those at least (25 chickens, wow). I still have to say I miss my chicken though.

Chickens are perfect for food. Tasty. Dumb. Not much personality. Dogs fetch and baby seals are just too cute- these endearing qualities contribute to our cultural dislike concerning turning those critters into burgers. Chickens? Ugly things that don't fetch your newspaper? On the grill. . .

Treat them nice while they're living, and get the ugly part over with as painlessly as possible, and I'm all down with a bit of white meat on my plate. :)

There is nothing wrong with this as long as it is done humanely.

Poultry is great, but the factories shold be banned. It shall make chicken more expensive, but we are not entitled to abuse animals. We after all are of the West and not of the "spiritually enlightened" Orient or other precincts of such darkness.

chickens were made for consumption, that's why they exist. if not they would never have been domesticated
PlanetaryGear 08/28/2005
Probably the most abused animal on the planet, and due to the crowding conditions at poultry farms, they are also the filthiest and most disease prone (bird flu anyone?). This has caused me to cut back on my poultry intake, and to reconsider it all together.

I like eating poultry, but as many have already noted, I don't agree with the environment in which they are kept in during their short lifespan. Yeah, I know, we're going to kill 'em anyway, but it doesn't mean they should be tortured while they're alive. I've heard of many horror stories about how chickens are cared for in these production farms; which of these are true or not, I don't know. I do, however, feel that conditions could be vastly improved.

There should be an immediate banning of caged hens and other poultry and a reclassification of free range. A return to the old farming methods with upgraded technological support would be a good idea for all of us. A natural way of rearing the birds is surely best. I will tell anyone who advocates any other barbarian form of husbandry that they should try wearing concrete boots for a week.

I love roast turkey. There is nothing in the entire human experience to rival Thanksgiving Dinner at my Mom's. You got a problem wth that?

Just as long as it isn't baalut (or whatever it was that's on the disgusting foods list!).

Col. Sanders came up with those 11 herbs and spices for a reason.
