A big part of Spanish culture, but humiliating and sometimes cruel to the animal. I dont think its right personally. Just as I dont like the "Running of The Bulls" they celebrate as well.

The worst thing what to do with animal! If you kill them for leather, you have some profit for them. BUT THIS?! WHY?!!
irishgit 11/27/2008
Having seen this live more than a few times, I have mixed feelings.
Absolutely, it is animal abuse. But equally absolutely there is a strong element of machismo, that is not easily understood by those of another culture. And while we might justifiably deplore it, there is a fine courage, both in the matador and the bull. It is simultaneously ugly and beautiful; brutal and elegant; ruthless and merciful. I have never seen anything like it, and while part of me deplores it, another part extols it.
I understand Hemingway's fascination.

Each year, approximately 10,000 bulls die in bullfights, an inaccurate term for events in which there is very little competition between a nimble, sword-wielding matador (Spanish for killer) and a confused, maimed, psychologically tormented, and physically debilitated animal.

I am not a fan of the bullfight, but remember folks, different strokes for different folks. I am sure that the NFL or NHL or professional wrestling horrify many folks in the world who see nothing wrong with bullfighting. What about boxing?
It's better to give the bull a fighting chance in the ring than in the slaughterhouse.
angryjed 12/27/2007
mixed of course but the bull gets his chance to gore the matador at least even though it's an unfair fight with the picadors. Also these bull breeds were created for their fierce nature, if no bullfights what do we do with all these angry bulls? how about the ranchers that raise the bulls, what of them?
Molfan 12/26/2007
Horrible and barbaric. could never see one. torturing an animal to death is a sport? Will not even say what I would like to see what the bull does to the matadore. but I am rooting for the bull.what choice did the bull have to be thrust in this so called sport.? less than a one.
LadyJesusFan77 7 12/26/2007
I think bullfighting is very harmful, to both the animal and the human. Humans will get hurt when the bull has had enough, and turns on them.
MariusQelDroma 08/01/2007
Canada has a point here. I think karma (meaning a horn stuffed up your behind) is a good thing here...

I went to a bullfight in Madrid a couple days ago, and it was nothing but a public display of animal cruelty to me. The most entertaining part of that evening was when a bull trampled a matadore and threw a picador out of the ring. I gave that bull a standing ovation at the end, because he was able to make something happen with all odds against him and after being stabbed in the neck by a spear. A team of armed men taking down a defenseless bull that does not want to be there is not something that I'd call a fair fight. The bull has no chance. If any one would dare to go head up against a healthy bull one on one, I'd pay to see that. But matadores who run away at the first sign of danger, humiliate the stupidity of a bull in front of a crowd, and rely on their buddies to weaken the bull before stabbing it to death are nothing but cowards to me. Sure, sports such as NHL, NFL, boxing and professional wrestling may be violent and dangerous, but the participants choose to participate. In bullfighting, the bull does not get to choose. After looking at the facial expression of the bulls at the stadium, their eyes only show fear and shame. They do not want to be there. If you need to kill a bull for meat, kill it instantly at a slaughterhouse. There is no need for a public display of torturing a bull to death.

numbah16tdhaha 03/22/2007
I think letting idiots run in front of them and get gored is a much better time for the bulls...
Bullsgetkilled 4sport 03/22/2007
What are they doing to animals? They drug the bulls, then they humiliate them, then they kill them!!?! Its like showing kids how to torture and kill animals/people. Its showing them that it's ok torture or kill animals.I think it's wrong and it should be BANNED.
lightfinger200 0 12/27/2006
I would like to see it.I would like to see the bull win.Animal rights activist should be happy. It is one animal sport that the animal actually has a chance to kill his tormenter.

Ok, I need to comment here. First off bullfighting IS a sport. Matadors spend a lot of time learning this art and believe it or not...they are in a lot of danger while fighting bulls. There have been matadors seriously injured and even killed. Second the bulls are raised on large farms by a limited number of breeders and are bred to be mean. These bulls are bred for generations and all are bred for one purpose and one purpose only. The matador works the bull placing the cerimonial spears (which are not very long and bull hide is tough) before killing the bull. If done correctly then the sword is placed between the shoulder blades directly into the heart. If not done correctly and the staff kill the bull the matador is shamed out of the ring. The meat is then sold in local restaurants during the "fete" in France or "fiesta" in spain. The bulls are not food or water deprived before the fights. The scene beforehand where the horse and rider come out in pads and aggrivate the bull serves two purposes. One is to give the matador a chance to see how he should work this bull by watching his reaction and two to get the bulls adrediline up which makes him even more dangerous to the matador. The Portugese version is done on horseback and the bull is not killed in the ring but is slaughtered afterwards for a bull can only be fought once, he becomes wise and more dangerous. These bulls have their horned cut blunt and covered with leather sheathes to prevent them from gouging the rider or horse. After the fight 7 portuguese boys come out and have to capture the bull and contain it. It is a sign of being a man. Most of the boys are in their mid teens. Some are younger. I know a lot of people find bullfighting cruel but understanding it helps me realize it is not as cruel as we think and like someone commented...our beef cattle in slaughter houses that put that steak on your table are much worse off. They exist like that for months where the bull used for fighting spends all but his final hours in a lust pasture. (I meant lush but will leave the typo in for the bulls left behind to do the breeding) As for the matadors being wussy...no, his life is in danger every time he faces a bull.
Kevin T 08/04/2006
It's not a sport and bullfighters are nothing but cowards. I say they go in their one on one with nothing else and the bull being healthy and not speared in the spine and see if those wusses come out alive.
texasyankee 09/07/2005
I have to comment, because a lot of people here do NOT realize how hypocritical we (americans) are with this. Bullfighting IS a sport and from what I hear, raises a lot of revenue for things like schools and the food of the bull goes to the homeless or Orphanages. Maybe I am wrong, or things have changed but I am guessing there is A LOT of revenue raised. It probably sounds terrible and all, but here in America we get our beef free of guilt, but the people I know who have worked in slaughterhouses refuse to eat meat. Because they know what goes on. The cow is tortured before getting killed, by having it's skin peeled off of it, while still alive. This is to make sure the heart can pump the blood out and there is no pooling of blood, which ruins beef. There used to be a lot of beef gone to waste, or turned into low cuts, because of this pooling of blood.
AndrewScott 08/29/2005
Of all the kinds of showmen people could glorify, why the ones whose art is slaughtering animals? Matadors are like movie action heroes in the way audiences revere them for showing bravery and suavity in the face of danger. Still, there's something barbaric about turning live animal killings into stadium entertainment. Though I've always wanted to visit Spain, watching a spike-filled animal slowly fall to a painful death is one cultural tradition I would skip.
