In the 19th century, this was the ritzy home of many of the city's elite. Then it became an Irish neighborhood before gradually becoming a predominately black and Latino area after WW2. Some really nice homes to be found here, many nice people too, I worked here when I was in my early 20's, and the area is often unfairly maligned by bigots- while there most certainly is crime there, and it has its share of knuckleheads and ruffians, but, frankly a lot of white people who don't say racist things openly will find codes and euphemisms for telling you to stay away from Roxbury, or other black areas in other cities, in ways that don't come out and say racist stuff directly, but imply it heavily.
