Very good about forty years ago. Made it big in a career that did not welcome her at all. And she held her own very well against tough odds. It wasn't until later in her career that she became the female Don Rickles. Every female comic owes her big-time.

Brassy and unfunny, without any edge at all, and chooses easy targets for her comedic attacks. 

Her time came and went long ago.

I have friends who swear by her, but I just never got the appeal. Being mean-spirited and abrasive is one thing if you're comedically attacking a societal totem that needs attacking (as our best comedians have done- Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks, to name a few) but how does consistently pointing out that Liz Taylor is really, really fat (or used to be, anyway) qualify as comedy? Or pointing out how badly some semi-celebrity is dressed at some awards presentation ceremony in El Segundo? Given the way Joan looks now, the last thing she should be doing is poking fun at someone else's physical and/or sartorial shortcomings.

Was she every funny? Not just funny looking?

It's hard to be female comedian. Joan Rivers has been around for a long time and has had to put up with a lot of crap from critics. Yes, she can be very mean spirited, but what male comedian isnt'. Anyway, check out an older album if you can find it, "What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most".

I can't even watch her, her humor has sunk to only insults and NO ONE looks worse than her after her unteeth plastic surgery, she looks like a bottle blond Michael Jackson now, just as ugly-strange!!
