The Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam was founded in 1638, and is one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens. Boasting of over 4,000 species, the Hortus Botanicus started as a medicinal herb garden and quickly expanded with help from the Dutch East India Company. The garden features a butterfly greenhouse, an herb garden, and “crown jewels” of the garden, which are highlighted rare or extraordinary botanical specimens.
