There are 88 identifiable constellations in the sky, having names from Greek heroes to mythological figures to signs of the Zodiac; their random patterns have been given shapes to aid in identifying individual stars. These groupings of the stars have been used by astronomers, farmers and sailors for centuries to identify the locations of individual stars, for navigational aids as well as a seasonal aid to plant crops. Hydra is the largest of the constellations; it is like a large winding serpent seen in the Southern horizon between Libra and Canis Minor. According to legend, each time that Hercules cut off the head of Hydra another one grew in its place.
