It was good enough for the Old West and before. And I'm quite sure that most of the animals were very well taken care of, as this was their only means of transportation other than walking.

In a large part of the world, animals are still a significant part of the agricultural economy.

Don't like it? I suppose you'd rather have them driving tractors and burning fossil fuels.

Riding a horse for recreation and light sport is fine. Riding a horse that is too small for the rider (a rider should never be more than 10% of the horse's weight), forcing that animal to perform under stressful conditions and pumped full or drugs is cruel. Riding elephants is cruel. Using oxens to pull carts is fine as long as it is not for long periods, in extreme weather conditions, and the load should never be more than 20% of the animal's combined weight.

Fading as our species advances with new technology- but three stars for historical importance and funny images. . .(Sure wish I could ride a war elephant on the DC beltway.)

While not as useful in modern society, this sure beats the hell out of walking. Just be nice to your favored beast of burden. :)

A good green alternative, horses and other draft or riding animals may make a big comeback.

I don't have much of a problem with this. In fact, I have always loved horseback riding. All things considered though, it's not too practical to think of it as daily transportation. It would just take too long to get to work on one or two horse power. Then again, I could probably keep a stable of horses with the money I shell out for gas every week!

If fossil fuels are not replaced by clean new technology,we may be forced back to horses and mules eventually. With the increase in population, that's a LOT of poop!
