Remember the scouting reports/rumors? "Could throw the ball 40+ yards accurately while on one knee." And indeed one cannot totally blame Klingler for being drafted by the Bengals (the NFL's dollar-store of the 90's) but this pick, as much as any, shows that QBing isn't arm strength as much as brains.

Drafted by the bungals, hard to thrive in Cincy when their is no help around you.

No "gimick" offense has ever been able to put up those kind of numbers again. Given the talent that Houston had it was the perfect offense for them. They could have played a traditional offense and would have probably only wond half as many games. As far as the success of David Klingler goes I think it was a shame he got drafted by the bengals. When your team is struggling all over the feild you take out Boomer and put in the young guy to get destroyed? The Bengals destroyed him. This is the first year the Bengals have been decent in years. Klingler started something like 25 games and was sacked 89 times.... So I don't think we could blame him alone. The whole team stunk and it was a poor decsion to put him in.

When people say bust, I always thought it meant the guy was a high draft choice AND his lack of success was surprising. In all seriousness, was anyone shocked that Klingler did not turn out to be The Second Coming of Joe Montana? He was Andre Ware with less melanin content. A good college level player in a system that allowed him to put up crazy numbers. That it didn't work out the same way in the pros seems terribly predictable to me.
