WWII was so tragic for many - but, enough time has passed that we look at the tragedies befallen our "enemies" in an effort to learn the horrors of war.

Since so many people died, who were innocent civilians, this is what makes this such a bad disaster. It is unfortunate that this doesn't get much coverage.

One of the great and largely forgotten or ignored tragedies of World War II. The death toll is unclear due to the fact that the liner was packed to the deckrails with refugees, and no accurate count of those onboard was taken. Designed to hold 1800, some estimates have the number on board over 10000, 4000 of them children, fleeing the onslaught of the Red Army. Approximately 1200 survived the sinking, leaving between 5000 and 8800 dead, making it the worst maritime disaster in terms of lives lost, in history.
