A passenger ferry that sank after colliding with an oil tanker in 1987 in Tablas Strait, between islands of Mindoro and Tablas in the Phillipines The tankers cargo ignited and a fire spread onto the Dona Paz, which sank within minutes with no time to launch lifeboats.

The official death toll on the ferry is 1,565, although some reports claim that the ferry was overcrowded (an extremely common practice in Filipino ferries) and that the true death toll is as high as 4,375. The manifest showed 1,568 passengers 56 crew, in excess of the licensed maximum.

An inquiry later revealed that the crew of the tanker was underqualified and that the boat's license had expired. It is the worst ferry disaster and one of the worst peace-time maritime disaster in history.
