Probably the most romanticized item on this list, it is dwarfed by many in the loss of life column. In human folly, engineering error, command hubris, regulatory laxity and managerial arrogance, however, it ranks near the top of the pile.

Anything of this magnitude is a tragedy, but then again, any loss of life is tragic.

Indeed terrible, but don't forget the "Empress of Ireland" with a loss of 1012 lives, most of these passengers died in their sleep. Read about it.

It is a bad disaster especially since a lot of weddings and innocent holiday makers were killed. But it is an overrated event which gets far too much credit. What about all these people killed in wars or all the other maritime disasters. This gets so much coverage simply because it makes a good, lovey dovey romantic story.
