This was pretty disgusting, but it wouldn't be the last time we helped overthrow a duly elected government. As Kissinger said re Allende in 1973, "I don't see why we should allow a country to turn communist due to the the irresponsibility of its own people."

This was the operation in 1954 that overthrew Jacoba Arbenz who was the President of Guatemala. Arbenz was a lefto that had been elected and then started imprisoning the opposition and inviting in Commies from all over. He also nationalized the holdings of United Fruit (gasp.) Coverts from the CIA backed a little rag tag goup of insurgents that soon overran Guatemala and poor old Arbenz had to hit the road. This incident belongs in the annals of the revolving door Banana Republic series.
