In fact, an international financial firm, I think Lloyd's of London, did a risk analysis that tested the vulnerability of various coastal areas to hurricane strikes. They found that Miami was the most susceptible city in the world to hurricane strike. Much of this can be attributed to Miami's geographical position: we get storms from both the Gulf of Mexico and the tropical Atlantic. That's what happened in 2005, when we got hit by Katrina and Rita from the Atlantic, and Wilma from the Gulf of Mexico

 | Carol-Mary (0) 01/08/2006 | We are seldom killed by ugly politics, but natural disasters certainly kill.
Speaking of ugly politics, anyone else bothered when controversial religious leaders claim disasters such as Hurricane Katrina are God's way of punishing neighborhoods for their sins? Quite insulting to damaged populations.
Hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, floods, etc. do not discriminate based on religion or the lifestyles of the killed. Further, I believe in a benevolent God who isn't about suffering hometowns.

 | StanUzbeck (16) 12/20/2005 | I'd say natural disasters are pretty dangerous to those parts of America vulnerable to hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, flooding, droughts, plague, pestilence, famine, and destruction by giant rogue asteroid. All we have to do is to transplant the entire American population to some place where these things don't happen. Like space.

 | dpostoskie (7) 09/06/2005 | Right now it would seem nature is a dangerous thing. But consider why the disaster happened in the first place. Honestly, why were there that many people living under sea level? Then it was made clear that they needed to leave, still, so many remained. Its been known for years, hell, since the beginning of Louisiana that this could happen. Its unfortunate and people need help but it was preventable. Dont build cities where they can be completely destroyed, period. We have to take nature serious and in this case people are suffering the consequences.

 | X Factor Z (15) 09/06/2005 | The United States is one of the most disater prone nations in the world...big hurricanes, like Katrina, the most tornadoes of any nation, earthquakes in the heavily populated West Coast...now there is talk that NYC can be hit and is very vulnerable to a big hurricane.
These disasters cost big money and disrupts the economy...the US can not afford
costly opersations like Iraq anymore and can ill afford weak and ineffective leaders like Bush.
