Timberwolf Organics

A lot has changed since I last used this food. The changes unfortunately are in the wrong direction, and coupled with the deceptive advertizing and justification I no longer feel comfortable recommending Timberwolf products. I would have rated it a 3 even with the ingredient changes to lesser quality, but the company has exhibited a certain bravado and arrogance, if not dishonesty, towards its clients, which leaves me with no choice but to drop my rating to a 2. A rating of 1 is reserved for products like Eukanuba, Kibbles n'bits, etc. Timberwolf is still a little better than petsmart or petco brands.

Update 09/14/07: Bacchus (my cocker) just finished a run of Timberwolf that lasted 2 months (he is currently on Orijen) and what I said in my original "review" still rings true. The one exception is that over time he ended up going to the bathroom a little more frequently on a daily basis than I would have liked, but I certainly will not begrudge this product for that. He has done exceptionally well on this formula and will be returning to it at a later date.
Original Review: Often I write these reviews because on the one hand I believe in the quality of a product and on the other, unfortunately, in response to stupidity/misinformation, ignorance, and/or apparent total lack of value in some of the "reviews" found in here. That's right folks, "reviews" is in quotation marks because I would dare say that 99.9% of those of us (including myself) who contribute to this site are not in the least qualified to really review a product. We simply offer opinions. Some opinions are based on unbiased research that we may have done ourselves, or paid others (pet nutritionists, vets, etc.) to do on our behalf. I personally have done both and will only "review" a product based on that. You need not take my word for it as you shouldn't, but I do advise you to do your own research. Unfortunately, many of the so called "reviews" on this site are based on nothing more than misinformation, old wives tales, unsubstantiated personal preference, and in some cases I suspect strictly alterior motives, if not worse.
Having got that out of my system, let's discuss Timberwolf. It is the third brand (lamb and apples formula) in my dogs diet, to be followed by Orijen. Yes, I do believe in rotating diets every 2-3 months, and harbor no allegiance in any particular dog food brand. My cocker has been on Timberwolf for almost 3 weeks and is doing very well! He was previously on Solid Gold (Barking at the Moon Formula) and Canidae (All Life Stages) both of which I have "reviewed" and hold to very high esteem. The switch to Timberwolf went without a glitch: no runny stools, or excessive pooping, no signs of allergies and with plenty of energy to boot. My dog's well-being notwithstanding, I would have given this food a 5-star rating even if he didn't like it, or didn't agree with him, based on the ingredients list. I realize that there are several issues regarding this company's customer service, although personally I have had all my email questions answered and to my satisfaction. My own dog's nutritionist cautioned me about their customer service, but when asked to rate the product itself she did not hesitate to recommend it. I do sympathize with those whose dogs either do not like the taste, or whose tummies cannot handle one or more of the ingredients in a particular formula. Neither of these factors, however, are good enough to berate a product. Let's face it; most of our dogs would rather eat out of a garbage can. They would certainly rather eat a chocolate bar or a cube of sugar over any dog-food in the matket. Fortunately they have us to steer them in the right direction, and hopefully we are intelligent enough to provide them with what is good for them, not based on our own preferences and egos, but based on knowledge. And if your dog does not like Timberwolf, there are plenty of excellent alternatives out there. Choose wisely, because our pets depend entirely on us to make the right decisions for them.
