The Persians landed here in 490 BC, and despite their great advantage in numbers, were defeated by the athletic Greeks. A messenger ran 42.2 km from Marathon to Athens to report the victory. Today runners run marathons of about the same length (26.2 miles).

Schinias beach is perhaps the best in the world for small children. Even two year olds can wade out to sea it the crystal clear water without the hindrance of waves and currents. Adults love to take power swims without fighting waves or just laze around in the water talking with friends. The beach is perfect for picknicks in its beautiful pine forest that reaches to the water's edge. Needless to say,small children love playing in the sand. Only about one hour's drive from downtown Athens, Schinias beach is one of the most popular of all Athens beaches.
