One of my very favorite actors from back in the day of Hollywood's Golden Age. Successfully moved from silents to talkies and always held his own with the big names from Shirley Temple to Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Usually played gruff, no-nonsense guys who often had a heart-of-gold and mordent wit to spare. Did a great job with a good role (Oscar nominated) in this movie about political corruption and yellow journalism. He actually only got the role after the original actor died before production of the movie began.
