Only 3 days before he left the team, he claimed that he had "absolutely no interest" in going to Alabama. Then he does a 360 degree turn and announces that he is leaving to take the new coaching position. It seems to me that Alabama kept the seat open just for Saban. That indicates that he most likely made his intent known weeks earlier that he wanted the job; Saban was just looking for the right deal. That's why his new college job pays more than most HC jobs at the pro level. Even Lovie Smith of the Bears, whos playing in the Super Bowl this year, earns less than what Saban is now at the collegiate level! It was Saban's dishonesty that will forever hurt his reputation with NFL fans in Miami.
It also didnt help that he didnt live up to expectations while with the team. At a time when Sean Payton took a lethargic New Orleans Saints team from 3-13 to 10-6 and into the NFC championship game, people were expecting a lot. And they should: parity between teams is required in the NFL, so much that a very bad team can turn it around quick by making smart free agent signings and drafting well. Thats what the Saints did last year. Of course, it helped that Reggie Bush fell onto their laps! The Dolphins havent gotten into the playoffs since 2001, despite consistently fielding great defenses. Much of that has to do with weak supporting talent, especially on offense. It would also help if they draft or sign a top ranked QB, as they did with Culpepper last year.
Culpepper is still a wait and see thing; he has a good shot of returning. And with Cam Cameron as head coach now, one of the best QB specialists in the league, you can bet that he will try to restore Culpeppers play back to full strength. He doesnt read defenses all that well, but the guy still has a great arm and physical talent, definitely one of the best in the NFL. The knee should be okay; usually it takes two years of rehab to recover from the type of injury he suffered. The mistake Saban made was starting him too early, before he was fully healed. With the core defensive unit returning next year that ranked third in the league last year, along with a re-invigorated offense under Cameron, I think the Dolphins will have a very good year in 2007. So good riddance to Saban!
