...Nothing on this list and barely anything on any list compares with it; and no final showdown in anything compares to the last stand of Holden,Borgnine & Co.

I say to the members on this site, if you live into your sixties, this flick will mean something to you. This is about a group of aging bad guys who want to pull one last big score and then retire. Well it doesn't work out that way, and the rest of the film is the pursuit of something else. I real feel for William Holden when his stirrup breaks and he falls. Those old bones can't take that. In the last great scene, when the boys are in the knocking shop and decide to risk all to go after their comrade, the sense of fatalism and what the hell is surreal. Be careful you youngsters. Never let a bunch of seniors, who have little left to lose, seduce you into mad adventures! Life goes fast enough the way it is.

A classic, perhaps the classic, passing of the West movie. Nasty, gritty, violent tale of men who can no longer fit into the culture they helped create.
