09/15/2005 | James is NOT king of the United Kingdom. England and Scotland were not melded into Great Britain until 1707. He was James I and VI. That means the First of England and the Sixth of Scotland. He acted like he was king of Great Britain but it was resented. He was King of Scotland when Elizabeth I died and he came to London with a horde of poor, hungry Socts retainers, who fell on the English plenty as would a horde of locusts.
All in all, he was a passable king and the first of the Stuart Dynasty.
