The State Library of Victoria was opened in 1856, starting with a collection of 3,800 books; since then, the collection has grown to over two million books and serials. Designed by architect Joseph Reed, the building not only contains a vast library of materials, but houses a large picture collection as well. A room dedicated to the game of Chess is also located in the State Library, containing a collection of books about the game as well as chessboards and chess paraphernalia. The State Library of Victoria is also noted for its sculptures adorning the front lawn, including one of Saint George and the Dragon and a replica of a French sculpture of the Joan of Arc.
