Totally unfunny hack who hung around for decades.   Why is it that untalented dweebs like this get opportunities and plenty of work, make loads of $$$ while countless numbers of the truly gifted are relentlessly overlooked while they wait on tables or drive cabs?  This is one of the wonders of American culture.

The shoe phone has stopped ringing, the cone of silence will no longer echo, for Maxwell Smart has passed away. (9/26/05) Born in New York City, Don Adams (Don Yarmy) joined the Marines at the beginning of World War Two but saw little action after Guadalcanal due to illness. Once the war ended he tried his hand at being an artist but soon discovered that he had a talent for mimicry. His first comedy act met with only lukewarm response so he left the entertainment field and went into the cartographic and engineering business. In 1954 he auditioned for Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and his routine was met with greater success so he got together with friend Bill Dana (aka Jose Jimenez, the funny astronaut back in the days of the space race) and developed a topnotch act that consisted of inside showbusiness remarks. This act was also well received. His best monologue was called "The Defense Attorney" where he mimicked actor William Powell. The late 1950s and early 1960s saw Adams playing nightclubs and he was a regular on the old Perry Como Show. In 1963 he became the voice of cartoon character Tennessee Tuxedo and that same year he expanded the role of inept house detective Byron Glick which he performed on The Bill Dana Show. In 1965 he was able to refine the Byron Glick character into the personna of Maxwell Smart, the self confident but inept secret agent. "Get Smart", which ran until 1970 not only gave Adams an opportunity to direct but it also gave him a forum for his love of movie parodies, some of which are easily recognized. (Get Smart itself was an obvious parody of James Bond pictures) Adams' cousin, comic Robert Karvelas, played secret agent Larrabee, and the actor who played Hymie the robot (Dick Gautier) was the same actor who played Conrad Birdie in the Broadway play "Bye-Bye Birdie." In 1971 Adams moved to another spoof series "The Partners" but the scripts were weak and the show was in the same time slot as "All In The Family" which was certain death for the show. Afterwards Adams no longer had a series of his own but he made a comeback in night clubs and doing guest appearances on other programs. He tried three times to revive "Get Smart" and for a very short time the series was brought back on Fox. Besides the voice of Tennessee Tuxedo, Adams was also the voice of cartoon's Inspector Gadget. Adams never experienced another success equal to that of "Get Smart" which during its heyday was a mid 1960s icon. The phrase "Sorry about that, chief" was used by everyone from school children to business people. (I had a classmate in Catholic school who once used it in the confessional!) Adams loved to do mimcry and the public loved to mimic Maxwell Smart. Like "I Love Lucy," "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Honeymooners," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and other family friendly comedy shows, Maxwell Smart will live on in syndication doing battle with Chaos, making us laugh in the process, and to quote Maxwell Smart, "And.......loving it." RIP Don and thanks for the laughs. (reposted with corrected information)
