 | James76255 (26) 11/04/2007 | "Pops" wasn't around when I was growing up, but I had a couple of uncles that were around a lot. I usually ended up in the role of gofer when there was some work to be done on one of the vehicles. I was sent for this and sent for that, but never really shown how to do any of the work that was being done with this and that. I did manage to pick up a few things over the years and can get by as long as it's something pretty simple. It would have made it easier if I had at least some idea of what the mechanic was talking about as he's rattling off what's wrong with the car. I think I manage to fake my way through it most of the time, but I do wish someone had shown me more about fixing a car. As I was growing up, most of my friends were learning about cars from their dads while I was teaching myself how to throw a slider. If I break down on the side of the road I'm lost, but if I'm ahead in the count I'm in great shape.

 | Flick01 (72) 01/10/2005 | My dad is not mechanically inclined so he couldn't teach me about cars. I got my mechanical ability from my mom's side of the family and from the time I was a little kid I had my hands on anything that moved, made noise or had gears. I would have liked to have learned about things mechancial, especially cars, when I was a kid. Eventually I taught myself and later went to a trade school to improve my skills but it was considerably harder than those kids who learned cars at an early age. I have recently begun tutoring a friend's 12 year old son when I work on an old classic Mustang hot rod on weekends. By the time he is 16 he'll know more about 1960s cars than I did when I was 25. These days there's good money in the repair or restoration of old Mustangs, Chevelles, Barracudas, etc and he'll be able to work on them all. But even more importantly, he'll know how to enjoy a car beyond just operating the controls and he will be able to take pride in a job that he has done correctly.
