One of my close friends has a collection of these (about 3 dozen) and they're kinda cool. You can pick them up inexpensively in most tourist destinations and they usually have some representation of the area where you purchase them (Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, etc.) The people who are REALLY into this are pretty organized. If you google the words "snow dome" you will stumble across a few organizations dedicated to the collection of these plastic oddities. I believe there is even a magazine printed for the truly hardcore. The bad thing is they are (much like the typewriter) fading from view. I spent the better part of two years in Tokyo intermittently poking around before I could find one in Japan for my buddy. They're not as common as they used to be.

I enjoyed these as a child and even now as an adult. I received a very nice one as a gift with a firefighter figure inside that I keep in my office now. If you collect these I can see where they could remind you of good times and fond memories.
