Debbie Stabenow is not likely to lose her seat in spite of the fact that the GOP has thrown a bunch of money at this one.

Michigan is an interesting case this election year. While Democrats are generally running strong this cycle, in Michigan they have been solidly on the defensive. Jennifer Granholm, Democratic governor of Michigan, has been in a tough re-election battle against a Republican running on the state's weak economic performance. Unemployment in the state runs much higher than the rest of the nation. Democrats control state government and they're taking the blame. The general anti-incumbent mood is helping to propel the Republicans. While the GOP is doing well in the governor's race, the same cannot be entirely said of the Senate race featuring challenger Rick Borchard and incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow. While Borchard has been polling well, consistent with the rest of the GOP slate, he has never really overtaken Stabenow, as the Iraq War and other national issues are pushing Michigan voters towards the Democrats in the Senate race. This is interesting in the respect that it looks like there is going to be a decent amount of ticket-splitting in Michigan this year.

But no matter what, it seems like the voters there want to send a message either way: it's time to kick the bums out, whether its the state and local Democrats or the national Republicans. Both parties are getting heat.

Michigan could be somewhat competitive next year. As of Oct. 2005, a staggering 74% of Michigan voters believe that the nation is headed in the wrong direction. Despite this, Bush's approval rating in the state is at 44%. Incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D) has an approval rating just two percentage points higher than Bush, at 46%. She is vulnerable next year if the Republicans can mount a serious challenge, but my guess is that it will take a candidate that is moderate on the issues and is willing to distance themselves from the Bush Administration.

This incumbent is weak and the race could well be competitive.
