Republicans were hoping to make this a competitive seat by recruiting a top-tier candidate like Congresswoman Heather Wilson to the race, but it turns out that she and other prospects took a look and decided to take a pass. Bingaman has been in the Senate for almost 25 years and has not had any really competitive races in a long time. He's low key, but does a good job of representing his state's interests overall. Truth of the matter is that Republicans would have a hard time finding competition against Bingaman, even in a favorable political climate.

Bingaman should be heavily favored due to seniority, incumbancy, and weak opponents. 2006 should be a strong Democratic year because of the ecomomy, the war, and the fact that it is the last election in an unpopular president's final term.
