There's no way Bernie Sanders won't win this one.

It looks like Congressman Bernie Sanders, is strongly favored to win re-election. Although he's an independent, Sanders has the backing of the Democratic party, unlike Joe Lieberman in nearby Connecticut who couldn't get his party's nomination. Moderate Republican Richard Tarrant is running against him, but he hasn't really caught on. Sanders has run statewide 8 or 9 times while in Congress and Tarrant is a rookie who has made a few mistakes in the campaign. It also doesn't help that Vermont is one of the most anti-Bush states in the nation. But not necessarily totally anti-GOP, as they do have a popular Republican governor there in James Douglas. Voters here tend to elect moderates who aren't all that ideological.

Vermont is a little patch of ground that has been friendly to left-leaning New Yorkers and others and they have poured into the state. It changed from a New England Yankee state to an extension of Queens and Brooklyn. Sanders as a New Yorker should have the advantage. The last native Vermonter, who was elected Governor, for instance, won in 1992.

Sanders the socialist is running for Senate with no significant Democratic challenger. His house seat is statewide, so this is practically a re-election. Shouldn't be competative in what is probably the most liberal state in the nation, except that his opponent has a lot of money to spend some right wing groups are pulling out the stops. O'Niel of swift boat fame has declared that Sanders is a danger to security and will be focusing his efforts against Sanders. Sanders however, is not Kerry.
