Unfortunately for him, he wasn't as good at taking punishment as he was at dealing it out.

02/08/2006 | There's no doubt that Hearns is one of the hardest hitting fighter pound for pound in the game. If not for the weak chin he would have been invincible. If I was rating the total fighter I might rate him a four, but on the strentgh of his punching power he's definately one of the best and a five. His two KO's against Roberto Duran and Pepino Cueves were two of best and most destructive in boxing's history.

11/03/2005 | A devastating jab. Maybe the best in middleweight history. Sugar Ray Leonard's cornermen opined that had Hearns not stopped throwing it halfway through their first fight, their man would have lost the match.
Hearns has 4 big defeats on his list: Hagler, Iran Barkley (twice) and his first bout with Leonard. But there is not one guy who beat him who did not get seriously messed up during those confrontations. Hagler felt compelled to furiously attack (and subsequently knock out) Hearns in the 3rd round of their match because The Hit Man had cut him up so badly in the 2nd that Hagler was afraid the fight would be stopped. Sugar Ray Leonard had to leave boxing for 7 years with a detached retina, and Barkley was getting slaughtered (and bloodied) in their first fight when he tossed a lucky punch that caught Hearns on the jaw.
No one could knock a guy down faster than The Motor City Cobra.
