 | oscargamblesfro (76) 03/22/2006 | Much thanks to Planetary Gear for reminding me of this outfit, he wrote a highly praiseworthy review of their live album 'Waiting for Columbus." I 'm not as familiar with this bunch as I should be, and don't own any of their albums, though I've heard the first few ones. Formed from former members of acts like The Mothers of Invention and the bizarre Fraternity of Man, they gradually built up a huge cult following through solid songwriting and constant touring. They explored everything from country and country rock to Grateful Dead like jamming to funky, r&b influenced rock and more. Guitarist Lowell George, who sadly died of a heart attack in '79 ( though they've reformed since then) was a good singer, guitarist, and songwriter. I recall reading somewhere that at the time, Jimmy Page felt that they were the best rock act going. I'm most familiar with their earliest work- things like "Dixie Chicken, " the title track off "Feats Don't Fail Me Now," and "Fat Man in the Bathtub." "Willin'" from the debut, about a truck driver, his job, his dealings with others, and his attitude toward life, is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the very best country rock tunes ever.
