maybe its because im young and therefore bias towards tyson but you have to say some of the punches thrown throughout his early career have to be classed of some of the hardest of all time ! just generally a brutal fighter, which i love to see in a heavyweight! i think he kept fighting for too long tho and his last 'losses' dont count in my opinion!! one of the greatest boxers to have lived in my opinion!!

Well said Git. To use that old expression "He could dish it out but he couldn't take it!"

Absolutely, although when looking at him one should keep in mind that his early record (when he established his reputation)contained a lot of tomato cans and assorted palookas. In some ways, he is similar to Dempsey as a boxer (although Dempsey, while no prince, looks like Mahatma Ghandi as a human being next to Tyson.) Both had limited to non-existant ring skills, and depended on battering an opponent into submission. The big difference between them is that Dempsey seemed all but immune to pain, and Tyson really couldn't take a lot of punishment.

Hard hitter? No doubt. But, a little know fact about this creep is that the character, "The Gimp", in Pulp Fiction was actually based on Tyson. After a fight, he would be drugged, hauled to Zed's basement, wrapped in leather and chained to the ceiling until his next fight. The guy we saw on the news was actually a body-double who was the first cloned human...a cross between Alfred E Newman and Fat Albert...

A fearsome brute who was raised like a beast to intimidate opponents with his savagery. In his early days he was scary, he once threatened eat an opponents children. He was all power, with minimal boxing skill. As he got to the top and started facing fighters with actual ring skills, it turned out he was imminently defeatable and his whole sorry existence started to unravel.

Pound for pound the hardest hitter maybe in history. Had he been 15-20 lbs heavier he may have actually killed people. Lacked alot of discipline and accuracy, especially in later years. Had trouble with bigger and/or taller fighters as his career progressed. e.g. Holyfield(6'2"), Douglas(6'4") and Lewis(6'5").

Yes he was a big hitter, but he was also a dirty fighter!!! When he boxed, he was good! when he lost his self discpline he lost all appeal with me!!!

Of his first 19 fights, 14 ended in a first round knockout. Quite often, his opponents were heard squealing upon being hit...that tells you something right there.

Powerful enough to knock you the hell into orbit

what sets tyson apart from the other big punchers in the heavyweight division, is hand and foot speed. He had tremendous hand speed. In his prime he could throw a six-punch combination in less than a second. That spells DOOM for most fighters.

There may have been harder hitters but Tyson punched with a savage ferocity that had a terrifying suddeness about it. tboneya is right, he's the only boxer in whose opponents I saw genuine fear.
ma duron 10/14/2005
The youngest to achieve the Heavyweight crown, Tyson regularly and predictably demolished in the early rounds any and all oponents in his early career, which is testimony enough of his power.
