That is the most reasonable assessment. The Iraqi people will never accept another tyranny after tasting freedom.

I like Kate's wait and see attitude. Anyone who disputes the justification for the Iraq War on THIS point doesn't carry much credibility.

Unfortunately, the situation in Iraq shall sink to much worse that pre-Saddam days. Saddam kept the lid on the murderous Shi-ites and now the "cat is out of the bag."

A correct assertion in principal but, unfortunately, not in practice in this instance. I rue the lack of post-conflict planning with regards to infrastructure restoration. And the insurgency, and subsequent policing action, should have reasonably been anticipated by those we pay to do so.

This is almost a certainty. The villianous Saddam Hussein ran a truly evil government that seemed to not even know the definition of democracy. Saddam lived in a palace while the great majority of his citizens lived in small huts. Women were repressed by backwards dogma and even worse, subjected to the worst kind of torture in rape rooms. All of those who dared to challenge this madman were killed and buried in mass graves. Religious freedom did not exist. Now, however, more elections are on the horizon and the turnout for the previous ones were fantastic (putting even the US to shame!). Crime has been reduced and over 80% of the Al Qeada prescence has been eliminated. From the day you saw people celebrating and hitting pictures of Saddam with their shoes--you knew that good things were coming the way of these citizens. In 10 years, I predict Iraq will be a powerful ally in the Middle East of the United States and the other 30+ Coalition nations--and could possibly lead other middle east nations into giving up their outmoded ways and turning to the glory of democracy.

I guess I'm not really enough of an expert to comment knowledgably on his subject. However, nation building attemps throughout history have gone extraordinarily badly. Nation buiilding attempts in this particular part of the world have gone even worse. My father, who worked and lived extensively in the Middle East, and tends to vote conservative, was adamant from the beginning that the Iraq war had little to no chance of success, given the make-up, history, and culture of the region. So while I don't know for sure - I definitely don't think the Bush Administration went through an honest assessment of what they were getting us into with this war.

Prior to the war the Iraqi people were being butchered and tortured by Saddam's government for over 30 years. Saddam had gassed the Kurds in the north, starved out and attacked with chemical weapons the Marsh Arabs in the south. He put to death close to -by some accounts-a million dissidents, and Shite Muslims that his government was oppressing filling thousands of mass graves with their dead bodies...many still being uncovered to this day. There was rampant unemployment. No free newspapers. Obviously no elections. Very little communications intrastructure. Saddam was bilking the oil-for-food program designed to limit the human factors of the imposed sanctions for his invasion of Kuwait. And there was simply no hope this tryanny would ever come to an end. There was prior to the war, and there still is the general understanding by the Iraq public that they now have an opportunity for a brighter future. A future determined by the people not by a genocidal despot.
