This basilica was erected in the 16th century to honor Mexico's patron saint, La Virgen Guadalupe. Though she was particularly popular in early colonial times, extremely widespread worship of the Virgen continues today. Thus, the basilica is graced by thousands of visitors each day, some of whom finish the last few miles on their knees.
