1926 Boston Red Sox (46-107-1) 5

The '32 team finished with an even worse record, yet this crew is another contender for the worst team they ever had. It's difficult to definitively say which of their 20's/ early 30's teams is the worst, but certainly a team with a record of 46 wins and 107 losses has to be seriously considered. There were a few players of note on the team but for the most part these were marginal major leaguers and over the hill types. Howard Ehmke was a good pitcher who'd had some excellent seasons considering how awful they were in previous years, winning 20 and then 19 games in '23 and '24- but was traded to the A's during the year. Ira Flagstead was a pretty good outfielder, but would have been a bench player on the Yankees, A's, and other good teams. Jack Tobin and Bill Jacobson were minor star outfielders in the early part of the decade with the Browns, but were at the end of the line with the Red Sox. No player on this club hit more than 7 homers. The only player on this team who became a big star was Red Ruffing, who became a star hurler for New York in the 30's, but at the time was even worse than an average Red Sox pitcher. The team finished light years behind New York in dead last, and were no match for contenders like Washington and Philadelphia too. A dreadful club, about 4.5 stars.
