Until last year, the 90's and early to mid 2000's were not exactly a sterling period for this franchise. Lots of bad years from the late 80's until then. The '03 Tigers had one of the most ghastly records of the last 100 years or so, but you could see that the seeds of a good club were in place, and eventually they blossomed. The Tigers in '96 were worse in a way, as they were stuck in a rut and had few good players. Their pitching in these years was usually quite wretched, and though they always had guys who could hit the long ball, they were mostly slow moving, practically immobile sluggers who struck out a lot, and they didn't really produce a lot of young, homegrown talent like they did in the late 70's/ early 80's. This crew suffered the indignity of striking out against Roger Clemens 20 times. An awful and boring team, though not one of the most abysmal ever.
