It would be wittier if it were not so painfully true.

We've had a few good leaders: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, but never one that you can say used his intelligence and vision for the better good of the country. We've had very smart Presidents there too; Richard Nixon was an extremely intelligent man, but his personal demons got the best of him.
Perhaps the Irish were right here. Politics seems to attract the lowest common denominator. I've wondered why some of the best have not chosen to run for office. I've always thought that someone like Lee Iacocca, former chairman of Chrysler, would make a good president. A practical manager who's a problem solver and looks at results as his benchmark for performance. In politics, there are a few people who are this way, but they're not getting consideration. The people who are running are the ones who kiss up to key ideological or special interest constituencies that represent a very small percentage of the population overall. That's why no one good runs. Why would someone like Lee Iacocca or even Colin Powell go through all the trouble?
