 | edt4 (106) 05/28/2008 | Bud was always the consummate "straight man" and, as much as I loved Lou Costello as a performer, I sometimes found myself laughing just as much if not more because of something Abbott was doing in a routine. The team tended to be disparaged by "high-brow" critics, but they got the job done; they were comedians, and they made people laugh. In a world torn by warfare and barbarism, this was no small thing. I was more a fan of their short-lived TV-series than I was of their movies, which always had the annoying distractions of an unconvincing love story, and, 9 times out of 10, the Andrew Sisters. The TV series was purer, and had the additional comedic talents of Sidney Fields, Joe Besser, Hillary Brooke, and Gordon Jones. Abbott and Costello, whatever their personal demons might have been, gave me a great deal of pleasure and happiness as a kid, and they can still make me laugh today, decades after their deaths. R.I.P., Bud and Lou.
