He was undeniably one of the all time great comedians. But, as I was growing up, I just thought of him as one of a bunch of corny old guys. As my sense of comedy matured, I picked up on his technique and recognized him as the timing genius that he was. But, by that time I had discovered the likes of Python and George Carlin and was moving in the direction of SNL...it was too late to go back to a less edgy time.

Probably the greatest comic of the radio era and although a lot of credit has been given to his gifts of timing and delivery, when you see him in old interview and off the cuff spots he was a wit on a par with Groucho too.

good memories of watching jack benny on Tv.I like his repeats, and saw bits of his movie. seemed like a very nice man. his act was the cheapskate who could not play the violin too well. heard in real life he was not at all cheap and was a pretty good violin player. never saw any news about anything bad about Jack Benny. he really seemed to be beloved by other celebrities and the general public. good person.

He was born Benjamin Kubelsky in Chicago in 1894 and lived until he was eighty years old. He was a huge force on the radio and then on television. He had a series of running gags and developed a persona as a skinflint. He was the master of the pregnant pause. One of the great skits on the show was the hold up man routine. The robber yelled out, "Your money or your life!" Benny paused, and the studio audience knowing his skinflint character laughed loud and long. The robber then repeated his demand: "Look, pal! I said your money or your life!" And that's when Benny snapped back without a break, "I'm thinking it over!" This time, the audience laughed louder and longer than they had during the pause. He was perpetually 39 years old and had a huge retinue of other funny things on the show.

Although his comic personna had him play a tightwad, it was never associated with his being Jewish. In my opinion, Benny's greatest comedic assets was his timing, his facial expressions, and he was always willing to give other actors the funny lines, usually at his expense. He was a master violin player and his off key playing was strictly for laughs. For many years his sidekick was Eddie "Rochester" Anderson who played his man servant but Rochester always got the upper hand in the dialogue. So Benny not only had a minority as a regular performer, but he let him have the funny lines, showing that Jack Benny recognized talent regardless of skin color which was taking a risk in some radio markets in the 1930s and 1940s. His biggest fan was probably the late Johnny Carson who wept openly when Benny passed away. Jack Benny was a great comic, a pioneer in both radio and television, his program was a showcase for talent, and he was loved by fans and celebrities alike.

Oh, he is one of my favorite comedians. He was always celebrating his 39th birthday, and his imminent retirement. And who can forget the violin?
