Right now, I just have very basic computer skills, which I'm okay with, but I'm willing to learn more.

This century belongs to computer! Computer is such an important access to the world - by knowing how to use it one can learn a lot of useful and resourseful information.

Considering that most jobs require atleast SOME time spent on the computer; I'd say it'd be a pretty good idea to atleast acquaint yourself with a computer once in awhile.

I paraphrase from Dilbert: people who don't have this will one day grow tails and be put in zoos. Absolutely essential in most good jobs in industrialized nations.

In our modern world, this is becoming more important on a daily basis.

It would be pretty hard to function in the world of work without at least minimal computer skills. Ole SF is ancient enough to remember when information was stored on index cards instead of a computer database. Ole SF also remembers typewriters, and the nightmarish complications of trying to correct an error. When I finally got around to Typing class in high school, we were issued these awkward erasers to correct our mistakes, which were not very helpful. Years later correction type made its appearance, which was not much better. SF's life was made so much easier with the advent of computers! Computer keyboards are easier to use, and correcting typos is not biggie! You can even use spellcheck! Yes, computers are great in so many ways.

In most fields it is just about impossible to get by without minimal computer skills. In fact, your proficiency level in some areas can be a determining factor if whether you get a promotion or not. In some fields, your ability to work through spreadsheet programs is a must.

Becoming increasingly important in the age of technology. The vast majority of jobs require individuals to have at least a minimal understanding of computers.

Man, I wish I'd have had more of these! Computers were just beginning to come on the scene when I was in high school, and every geek, nimrod, poindexter, and spaz had signed up for these classes (taught by an equally-nerdy middle-aged goofball). I'd pass by the classrooms, slowing down to gawk at the attention being paid to a glowing screen sitting on top of a beige box with levers and slots all over it (walking away laughing, dead-sure it was all a passing fad with no practical use). Five years later, I found myself trying to navigate around on one, and realizing I was profoundly "behind the times". I can just about work one now, but it was rough sledding for too many frustrating days and nights. If there are any parents reading this, do yourselves (and your children) a MONSTER favor: encourage them towards computers AT ALL TIMES. The sooner they become comfortable with them, the better off they'll be in every aspect of life. Don't let 'em figure it out the way I did.

We live in a computerized world!

Today, not being able to use a computer at all is kind of like not knowing how to use a telephone. That said though,Computers are highly over-rated.We have become FAR too dependant on them,as we see whenever true disaster strikes,or even when the electricity fails.

You can't get by in todays world, in virtualy any job, without computer skills. Weather you are a Rocket scientisc ot a cashier at McDonalds... you will need to know how to use a computer... now which of these fancy little buttons do I push to enter this. lol, Just kidding, couldn't resist.

In the business world you really must learn how to use and continually develop your computer skills. As far as everything else it is a useful skill but not a critical skill yet, but it may very well soon be. In the everything else category, with skill comes discipline. As with everything that has a lot of good, there is as much if not more, that is bad. This is the challenge that some of your computer savvy should be directed towards.

I resisted the pressures to get a computer until about five years ago. Although I could still get along without one, it sure has made my life easier in many respects, and more fun to some extent (like, RIA). For younger people, it really is a must.
souljunkie 10/21/2005
In this day and age it is a must. I'm having to beg my daughter who has no interest in them (she has a mind like me, she is into the arts and has not mind for sitting still in front of a computer)to get off her but and take the computer seriously. Please find a way to make them interesting to your children.

If you want to fully function in this century these are definitely skills you should acquire and continue to improve upon. However, based on the continued resistance to learn even the basics by some, you would think it was like asking them to do something unnatural. Personally, I think people should have to pass a simple user test and agreement not to deface or otherwise knowingly harm a computer before they are ever allowed to put their grimy little fingers on an office, lab, library or classroom keyboard. (Either my geek is showing or am I just sick of cleaning up after the technically lazy.)

Its kind of hard not to have good computer skills these days. Of course this rating will be a bit biased coming from computer users here on Rateitall.com
Wavebacker 10/21/2005
Practically a must now. Some basic understanding of a computer plus knowing how to use Microsoft Word is very helpful. You'll also want an e-mail account. Older people dont need to know about computers though.
Kairho 10/21/2005
Especially in today's world. I just cannot understand how someone who has no idea how their 2 station network operates can fix anything when it goes to @$%^@*. And on the work side, are there any jobs anymore where computers are not involved somehow?
Cindyo 10/21/2005
The technology in computers has been amazing. We're becoming a society that is getting more dependent on computers. I know many times my mom has asked me how to do things on the computer for her (or show her how to do it). I am so glad that I have even the basic computer skills; not everyone has them.
numbah16tdhaha 10/20/2005
Considering all the crap we do on the computer, this one is an easy five.
Mad Hatter 10/20/2005
In this day in age, where it seems that everything is done by computers or the internet, having computer skills is essential.
