I started taking lessons, but I lost interest. I am rather in the John Madden school of travel although I fly commercial. If you travel to foreign climes, you have to travel by air. It is a long sea voyage to Australia, for instance.

Especially if you're in the movie Airplane!

. . . if I were in a situation where they'd need ME to fly a plane, I figure we're all going to be pretty screwed. I guess any knowledge is useful knowledge in the right circumstances, but this one is a little more far-fetched.

I'm satisfied with being a passanger just fine.

I took flying lessons once, when I was a lot youger (total of 3 lessons before I gave up). My instructor was an alcoholic, but he told me I was a natural pilot (hah!). Flying a plane, at least a small Cessna, is a piece of cake - no joke. Lots easier thandriving a car. However, taking off was a real problem for me - I could not keep the plane going in a straight line down the runway very successfully. I was very good at zig-zagging, which may have been useful if I had been under enemy fire. Anyway, landing was also a bit of a challenge, especially since the airport I took lessons at required you to come in very low over a fence before dropping down onto the runway. Like I said, once you're in the air, and as long as you stay in the air, it's pretty easy. That said, I doubt I'll ever have to use this semi-acquired skill again in my life.

I've never had a time in my life when I've thought, "If only I had learned to fly, I wouldn't be in this situation."

Being one, I find this quite useful. But only when in a small plane!

I'm too much of a klutz. I 'd get distracted and crash the plane.

Possibly a good thing to know. If it wasn't for the fact I need to wear glasses, I would have tried to become a fighter pilot!
