I'm thinking about buying one of these, setting it up on Venice Beach and returning once a year to collect the donations that are left in the hat I put on the sidewalk in front of it.An essential addition to every collection. Just when you think you've seen everything.(I know this is totally unratable without an "amazing" button...) Strange Instruments - The most amazing videos are a click away

It's not essential, but I really enjoy playing the guitar. It will be more enjoyable the next family reunion.

a 3.5. cannot say if it is essential, wish I could play an instrument well. wish I had stuck with piano lessons and did not give up. Have always been amazed at someone who can play a musical instrument. and for those who can play several it is like wow! when I listen to music I alway am taken by the instrumental breaks in the song. they weigh as much importance to the song as the singer if not more. playing an instrument well sure would be a bonus.

Knowing how to play musical instrument is like speaking another language. Music is so powerful and so verbal in its own way. I can play piano a little bit and I feel like I know japanese...

Not essential, but a fun skill to have and enjoy. Without music, this world would be a very boring place.

While not 'essential" this can bring a lot of joy into ones life.

For me, it's nothing but fun. When I was 16, my sister came home for Christmas from college with a guitar. I picked it up and played it for about 3 weeks, a few hours a day. Later, I bought my own guitar. When I was 18, in 1972, I played "American Pie" (all 7 verses) for about 3,000 people at a school assembly. No lessons, no sheet music, just playing it by ear and from memory. I was never nervous to play and sing, in any situation, after that.

Definitely a good thing, not essential. I still have my old trumpet from when I played years ago in Junior Highschool band (yes, I was a band geek, but not in highschool so it didn't really count)

Music education and appreciation is so very important in today's society. You don't have to become proficient, but knowing the basic structure of music will let you really appreciate the rip-rap.

I can play the radio. Does that count?

It's only useful if you use it! Profound statement right? I play the guitar and have for 36 years. I love the instrument and it brings me great joy. I used to play in a band, but now play at my church. I sing Christian music and in the past played the guitar while I sang. Now I use recorded music for the background when I sing. I find it allows me to concentrate on my vocals more. Playing an instrument can relieve stress, allow you to bond with others, and is a great way to pass the time. It is also good for the mind. I would encourage anyone to try playing an instrument as you might just enjoy it.

Not essential, but I feel better know my way around a trombone.
