I think abichara's conclusions are right on the money. What should have been a walk for Republicans now looks like a real contest thanks in large part to Gov. Murkowski's ham-handed style.//Update: I've changed my mind about this one. Murkowski lost the primary to popular Wasila Mayor Sarah Palin who looks more than capable of keeping this one in the Republican column. Former Governor Tony Knowles is well-liked (and the Democrats could not have made a better choice) but I think he'll lose in this pretty solidly Republican state.

The competitiveness of this race depends on many factors. Even if Governor Murkowski were to run for re-election, this would probably be a very close race. He started out on a bad foot by appointing his daughter to his open Senate seat after winning the gubernatorial election in 2002 and he hasn't really recovered politically from that. Making matters worse for him is an economic recession in the state. Oil is Alaska's top export commodity, yet despite higher energy prices, Alaska has been mired in economic troubles throughout Murkowski's term. If he were to run, Murkowski could expect a strong challenge from his own Lieutenant Governor. If Murkowski doesn't run, his #2 will probably be the Republican nominee. Either way, he should expect a GOP primary race and a tough general election race. Even though this is a Republican state, voters in the past have been willing to vote Democratic in governors races. Speaking of which, on that side, we have talk that former Governor Tony Knowles (D) is looking at re-gaining his old job. Should he decide to run, we will have a race, with former Gov. Knowles slightly favored, given that the Republican party is relatively divided in the state, regardless of Governor Murkowski's plans In Alaska, that's how Democrats get elected to the statehouse.
