This might be a sleeper of a race. Although Maine has been trending Democratic in recent years, Governor Baldacci has been under the gun for mismanaging the state health care system. Combine that with a weak economy and you have an incumbent governor with weak approval ratings. There are about 3 or 4 Republicans running, but whomever they nominate will try to make it a referendum on Baldacci's tenure. The GOP's chances will go up if they nominate a more moderate candidate for the job. Maine usually doesn't elect candidates that are too conservative.

Although Mainers occasionally like to elect Independents and moderate Republicans (like their two current senators, Snowe and Collins) this is now a pretty solidly Democratic state. Incumbent Democratic Gov. Baldacci's approval numbers aren't all that impressive but it's hard to envision any Republican who could defeat him.
