Another very close race. Maryland is very Democratic state. This year promises to be a strongly Democratic year, yet Republican Governor Bob Erlich continues to fight hard for his re-election, and in fact, might have a slightly better than even chance of retaining his seat. He won in 2002 by upsetting the Democratic candidate, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, one of Bobby Kennedy's daughters who was serving as the state's Lieutenant Governor. He won that year primarily because she ran a weak campaign, and he ran a comparatively stronger one in a year that leaned slightly Republican. But the Democrats aren't taking it quietly this time. Baltimore Mayor Bob O'Malley is a very strong candidate who has lead in most of the polls thus far. But Ehrlich has also done respectable job over the past 4 years, thus voters don't have a very compelling reason to throw him out of office.

Ultimately, this is another race that might be decided by turnout. With an open Senate seat on the ballot, Democratic turnout might be heavier than normal in this state, which is one of the most Democratic in the country. Ehrich could be swept out of office more out of gravity than because of his record.
