The conventions rarely determine the final outcome. Usually they occur about 3 months from the election, so whatever effects it might have are usually worked out by then. The convention is usually just a long infomercial for the parties to showcase their platform and whatever new talents they have on the ranks. Usually the party holding the convention gets about a 5 point jump in the polls after the convention due to increased publicity. Party conventions used to be convened to pick a presidential candidate, but today they are essentially ceremonial, since the candidates are already picked during the primaries. We haven't had a truly competitive convention in over 50 years.

I honestly think this is what helped Bush somewhat, I thought some of the speeches were so damaging and this is what pretty much gave him the win.
