You kind of have to in Arizona. Water conservation is crucial here. To do this, I'm gonna close down all those stupid golf courses when I take over! UPDATE: I have a new reason for turning off the water when I brush. I go into my hallway where our cockatoo Thackery resides and brush my teeth in front of him since he seems to find it fascinating, yet slightly aggravating...

It doesn't hurt, I suppose, but its always struck me as one of those relatively trivial "environmental" things people can feel good about before driving down to the mall in their Hummer.
And while you're at it, use a manual toothbrush, you lazy mofo's

This one is new to me, just never heard of it. I will do it because I think every little bit of water saved will end up being a lot of water. I do turn off the shower while I do all my girly things though and I TRY not to flush the toilet each time but it's just so hard because, well you know why. We need to abandon luxury and go for simple. In Africa they don't even use toilet paper so we are quite lucky lol

ehh...this one is a little too eco-friendly...although I can see it happening

I didn't know that anyone would leave the faucet on when brushing their teeth. Perhaps I should follow people into their bathrooms more often in the future.

Does this mean that the water is constantly running when you are not brushing your teeth?
zuchinibut 05/12/2008
I remember hearing to turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth as a child. This probably had an effect on me not running the water while I brush as an adult, but I don't think this act saves too much water. So much more water is used flushing toilets, washing dishes and clothes, and bathing.

My wife continually tells me to turn off the water while I'm brushing my teeth. You would think I would learn but for some reason I don't. :)
trebon1038 05/12/2008
Oh my, believe it or not...I do this

I've always turned off the water when I brush my teeth. I did it this way before I even knew or cared about saving water. Does anyone really leave the water on when they brush their teeth?
Djahuti 05/22/2006
It's not necessary to leave the water running while you brush. You'd be suprised how much water gets wasted if you take the time to brush thoroughly while it's running. If you aren't in a very cold place, you can also turn off the shower while you soap up.

This was instilled in me as a kid so it has never been something I really thought about. I figured everyone did this. I guess you can't get into the habit, you could install those motion sensor faucets that turn off by themselves

I've had my lazy moments, but at least I've never reached the point where it seemed like way too much effort to to twist the water knob off while I brush. If I ever do become that lazy, what hope do I have to get the toothpaste up to my mouth and brush for more than two seconds?

When I was younger I always thought that a little bit of water won't hurt much, but then one day at school I learned that so much water is wasted just from the few seconds or so by leaving the water on while brushing teeth. It may not seem like it would make a difference by turning the water off for a few seconds, but it does. Especially if everyone did the same.

I remember this craze. It all started on Earth Day. 1972. It seems to have had a great deal of impact, everyone I knew then got smart, and involved, and got GREEN! And now, more than 30 years later, people are still discovering how good they can make themselves feel by saving the environment. I don't know if it truly helps but I suppose it doesn't hurt.

Environmentally friendly activities often are criticized for being impractical but in all honesty, what sense is there in letting the water run while brushing your teeth?Economically, you're literally putting money down the drain.

I've made it a point to stop doing this. I've been pretty bad about leaving the faucet on in the past few years, and I'm trying to make a concious effort to stop doing it. UPDATE: Actually, I think not brushing one's teeth should count as "air pollution". Even if it is localized. I've been around people whose breath should be declared a biohazardous site.
scarletfeather 10/24/2005
Of course you could really show your interest in the environment by not brushing your teeth at all. Just think of all the precious water that would be conserved. Only problem is your stinky breath and rotting teeth would make you a pariah.
Redoedo 10/24/2005
One of the few valuable lessons Barney teaches. There is no need to have the water continuously running when you are brushing your teeth, as it is a needless waste of water.
Kairho 10/23/2005
Half credit on this as the faucet is partially blocked and it only runs at half power anyway.
