Where I live I run a fan over my stairwell on the second floor, pushing the heat down in the summer and reverse the fan direction to drawi it up in the winter.

Living in San Francisco, I haven't really needed much of anything besides an open window to keep my apartment comfortable.

A box fan or free-standing fan is good too, and beats air conditioning in my opinion.

we have ceiling fans in the bedrooms and dining room. it does help circulate air. and keeps it cooler in the summer months. air conditioning is so expensive we cannot afford to run it unless it is horrible hot. otherwise ceiling fans and regular fans help. plus opening windows.

I would do it but fans are hard on bats. My little gaggle of pet bats would suffer.

They were in the condo when I bought it, and I do use them for the few weeks of the summer when it does get hot. I don't exactly live in Arizona.

Ceiling fans are great. Whether you are trying to save the environment, or just trying to save some money, you can hold off turning on the AC for quite a while if you combine turning on ceiling fans with opening windows.

I dont know why, but i never liked ceiling fans that much.

These work great and although they use electricity, it's much less than running the air conditioning. Only had a problem one time with a fan that no matter what I did, I couldn't balance the blades and the fan wobbled and made a lot of noise. Thought it was going to fall from the ceiling.

Ceilings fans have been proven to help keep a room cooler in the summer, even if it is only a few degrees this can be a savings on the use of air conditioning. Living in an environment that gets very hot I find them a necessity, even in the winter months by flipping the reverse switch the fan will help to circulate the trapped cooler air on the floor and circulate the warmer air that rises to the top. There are some very attractive models on the market now as well.

I would have given this a 5 a few months ago. Because the area I live in usually doesn't get too hot durring summer... and ceiling fans and windows open is usually fine.... However, we just had the hottest summer in 32 years and well, I got central air installed.

Well, I haven't installed one, per se, but I've got two ceiling fans in my apartment, and I never have turned them off yet. The air circulation is great, and it helps by letting us keep the thermostat and a slightly higher temperature and still stay comfortable. Overall, it saves a lot of energy.
