 | Soxx (0) 10/28/2005 | Well, there are a few versions of this gem. The original is the single released on Sun 232 (Folsom Prison Blues b/w So Doggone Lonesome) from 1955. Then there's the live version from the actual Folsom Prison from the 1960's. And I suppose, since it was a hit, Johnny and The Tennessee THREE (Carl Perkins had joined them as far as I know) also played it at San Quentin. :D

 | GenghisTheHun (177) 10/28/2005 | Johny Cash and the Tennessee Two (Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant) recorded this great song in 1955 or 1956. I think Johnny's first album was in 1957, so this must have been a single for the juke boxes in taverns, honkey tonks, etc. This was Johnny's Sun Records era.
He later in the 1960's actually went to Folsom Prison and had a show. The Folsom Prison Blues rendition that you hear with the background cheering (assuming you listen to JC, dear readers) comes from that concert.
