A logical progression of musical adventurousness beyond Papa Haydn, past Beethoven (whom Haydn and Mozart influenced significantly) and, if you like, through Shostakovich. Among his mature output: ORCHESTRAL: 13 symphonies (nos. 29-41) 19 piano concertos (nos. 9-27) 5 violin concertos 4 horn concertos 1 sinfonia concertante for violin and viola 1 sinfonia concertante for oboe, clartinet, bassoon and horn 1 flute concerto 1 oboe concerto 1 clarinet concerto 1 bassoon concerto 1 flute and harp concerto; CHAMBER MUSIC: 22 string quartets 19 piano sonatas 16 piano and violin sonatas 6 trios for piano violin and cello 2 flute quartets 1 piano and strings quintet 1 clarinet quintet 1 horn quintet; VOCAL AND CHORAL: 6 operas 3 masses 1 requiem Mass. As near contemporaries, the creative rivalry with Beethoven would have been momentous; one can little imagine the degree to which music would have evolved had this artist lived as long as Beethoven (57) or Haydn (77).
