On October 16, 1990, the highly ranked Buffaloes came into the "Show Me" State to play the lightly regarded Mizzou Tigers. Missouri came to play, however, and was leading the game by a point with a few minutes to go in the 4th quarter. After a couple of abortive attempts to get the ball into the end zone from a few feet from the goal line, the Colo. QB spiked the ball to stop the clock on 4th down. The refs apparently fell asleep and on "5th down" they got the ball in and won the game. Colo. got part of the Nat'l Championship that year.
