Grove, of Coatesville, PA, was defending his crown against "The Clown Prince of Boxing" in Mexicali, Mexico. He had won (by any expert's estimation) no fewer than 11 of the 14 previous rounds when he got knocked down 3 times by Paez in the final round. As there was no 3 Knock Down Rule in Mexico, Grove finished the fight. The decision was given to crowd favorite Paez and Grove lost his belt. (Add picture)

Let this be a lesson to all future title holders: Never defend your crown against a Chicano challenger in Mexico. This one was highway robbery. It was also the last of the 15 round championship bouts. Grove had fought a masterful fight, winning no fewer than a dozen of the first 14 rounds. In the 15th, however, Paez caught up with him and knocked the champion down 3 times. As there was no "3 knock down" rule in effect, Grove collected himself and finished the bout. He should have won the fight by at least 8 points on each judge's card. Instead, the judges awarded the fight to the Mexican challenger ... much to the delight of the hometown crowd.
