The coach and majority of players constituting the Orange County Buzz had earlier in the season been the Los Angeles Stars. The Stars had a woeful record whereas, their rivals, the Orange County Crush had been doing quite well. The Crush financially collapsed in mid-season and the organization folded. The coach of the Stars and many of his players promptly left L.A. and reorganized as the Orange County Buzz. The Buzz was substituted into the Crush's former schedule and was allowed to keep the dead organization's winning record. After the Buzz lost a few games it was time for the ABA Playoffs. As a result of a record of wins they largely had nothing to do with, the Buzz players were playoff bound.
